York is on England's designated cycle routes and the nearby Yorkshire Wolds now have brilliant cycle routes for all abilities, mapped out by East Yorkshire Council. The North Yorkshire Moors and Dales are better known, also very conveniently placed for York and have many challenging and easier routes.
Bridlington is the end point of the The Way of The Roses cycle route which starts at Morecombe Bay. A short diversion to York might prove to be very welcome mid-way through this long distance cycle route.
The Dalby Forest has fantastic rough terrain cycling with green through to black runs and is about 45 minutes away by car. It provides a wonderful day in the outdoors, as there are plenty of other facilities there for the non-cyclists in the family/group.
'LE TOUR' - the grand depart of the Tour de France, July 2014 was a spectacular success. York featured as the start point on Day 2 and the city positively buzzed with excitement. We were there, and enjoyed watching the cavalcade and the 200 cyclists ride by York Minster. One of the aims of the legacy of this big event is to provide every child in Yorkshire with access to a bike - what a great idea! It has been followed by LE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE May 1st - 3rd 2015 and the second Tdy 29th April - 1st May 2016, the third, late April 2017, the fourth May 18 and the next in 2019. Cycling really has taken off in Yorkshire
